Travelling with a power bank is a great way to keep your devices charged while you're on the go. However, because power banks contain lithium batteries, there are important airline regulations you should be aware of before you fly.
Can I Take My Cygnett Power Bank on a Flight?
Cygnett power banks with a battery capacity of under 100Wh comply with the guidelines established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for air travel. These power banks can be carried onboard an aircraft, provided they are packed in your carry-on (cabin) luggage and not in checked baggage.
Important:
- Power banks must not be packed in checked baggage. They must always be carried in your carry-on luggage.
- Cygnett power banks with a capacity of over 30,000mAh cannot be taken onboard an aircraft, including in your carry-on luggage, as they exceed the airline battery capacity limits.
- If you are travelling to China, please note that Cygnett products cannot be taken into the country, as our products do not currently hold China Compulsory Certification (CCC). We recommend checking the latest import requirements with your airline and the relevant Chinese authorities before travelling.
Please note that the information above is provided as a general guide. Airline policies and country-specific regulations may vary, so we always recommend confirming the latest requirements directly with your airline before you travel.
Which Cygnett Power Banks Can Be Taken on a Plane?
All standard Cygnett power banks under 100Wh are approved for carry-on air travel, including our largest travel-approved model:
- Cygnett 27,000mAh USB-C Power Bank – Approved for carry-on air travel (under 100Wh).
Exception:
The CHARGEUP MAX 30,000mAh Power Bank exceeds airline limits and cannot be taken on commercial flights.
Understanding Watt-hours (Wh)
Airlines use Watt-hours (Wh) rather than mAh to determine whether a power bank can be carried onboard.
As a general guide:
- Up to 100Wh: Permitted on most airlines without prior approval.
- Over 100Wh: May require airline approval or may not be permitted at all, depending on the airline.
All standard Cygnett power banks fall within the 100Wh limit, with the exception of the CHARGEUP MAX 30,000mAh Power Bank.
Travel Guidelines
To help ensure a smooth journey, please follow these recommendations:
- Always pack your power bank in your carry-on luggage.
- Do not place your power bank in checked baggage.
- Store your power bank in a protective case or cover the terminals to prevent accidental short circuits.
- For additional protection while travelling, consider using a fire-resistant storage pouch.
- Ensure the battery capacity (mAh/Wh) is clearly labelled on the power bank, as this may assist during airport security screening.
Why Can't Power Banks Go in Checked Luggage?
Power banks contain lithium-ion batteries, which are classified as dangerous goods for air transport.
If a lithium battery were to overheat or become damaged, cabin crew can quickly respond if the device is in the aircraft cabin. This is why airlines require power banks to be carried in hand luggage rather than checked baggage.
Before You Travel
Although Cygnett power banks comply with international air travel guidelines, individual airline policies may differ.
Before travelling, we recommend checking directly with your airline for their latest requirements regarding lithium batteries and portable power banks.
Following these guidelines will help ensure you can travel safely and avoid delays during airport security screening.
